You're up against three problems - power handling, excursion, and cone distortion. Even though it might not be as small as you were hoping, I bet it would amaze a lot of people. The Vypyr cab is a lot bigger then it needs to be for an 8" - cutting one down might be your best bet. The smallest speaker I've heard that sounds "big" is the 8" in the Peavey Vypyr 15, but I'm pretty sure they use digital modeling to make it happen. that seems like it's REALLY going to be lacking on the bottom end. I've just found that the smaller speakers just really lack any sort of impact and once you get up to the 10" range, you are really looking at about 90% of what a 12" speaker can do. Plus since they are a lot more efficient than the 4" or 6"s, you won't need to run the pedal/amp as loud.īut I know you are going for minimum size. I'd also consider the Weber Silver 10 or Blue Pup even though they are only rated up to 30 watts. The Ragin Cajun would be pretty far up my list. Of course with a lighter speaker, you can build a cab out of thinner materials. I think for a traveling rig, I'd go for the best and lightest 10" speaker I could get a hold of. I wouldn't consider it for any serious purpose. Sounds great for how small it is, but it's pretty small and only 5W. Dr Zs 10s are pretty killer in my opinion. 10s are the smallest I'll go if I care about how it sounds.
